Richard Gere: Celebrity, Gentleman, & first Native Philadelphian to receive prestigious award

I was researching Philadelphia-born celebrities for this article, and to my surprise (and delight), I learned that Richard Gere was born right here, in the City of Brotherly Love. I did some digging to see if Mr. Gere was the charitable type, and I was happy and relieved to discover that he is, indeed, a generous gentleman. And as it turns out, the apple didn't fall far from the tree…

Richard Gere's father has volunteered for Meals on Wheels, which began in Philadelphia in 1954, for almost twenty years. The program was the first home-delivery meal program in America. Supporting the cause, which is obviously close to his father's heart, Gere became a spokesman for Meals on Wheels, and in 2007, appeared in the charity's first-ever advertising campaign with his father.
